Superman proved he's got what it takes to leap tall box office records, as "Man of Steel" hauled in an impressive $125.1 million in its extended opening weekend.

The massive sales, including $13.3 million in IMAX sales and 41 percent in 3D showings, was the largest June opening weekend ever, topping the $110.3 million premiere of "Toy Story 3" in 2010.

The reboot of the classic series is expected to dwarf the franchise's previous effort, "Superman Returns," surpassing the 2006 film's $200 million domestic box office total in just one week.

Executives at Warner Bros. hinted the reception of "Man of Steel" and the new face of Superman, Henry Cavill, could help launch a series of Justice League films.

Studio president Dan Fellman refused to be specific, but he did say "Henry will be around for a while."

Coming in second place for the weekend was the apocalyptic comedy "This is the End" with $20.5 million, followed by "Now You See Me" with $10.3 million in its third week. "Fast and Furious 6" fell to fourth place with $9.4 million in its fourth week.
