Johnny Depp won the People's Choice Award for Favorite Movie Icon at a ceremony in Los Angeles Wednesday night.

The honor followed a tumultuous period in the actor's life during which he went through an ugly divorce from his wife, actress Amber Heard, and suffered the death of his beloved mother, Betty Sue.

"I came here for one reason tonight and one reason only. I came here for you, the people. Through whatever good times or bad, you have stood by me and trusted me and you very, very graciously invited me here once again tonight, so I appreciate that very much. You have no idea how much I appreciate it," Depp said as he accepted the statuette, the 14th People's Choice Award he has earned throughout his storied career.

The 53-year-old actor was clean-shaven and well-dressed in a suit as he delivered the emotional speech, which ended with the nod to his mom, "Give them hell, Betty Sue!"
