LOS ANGELES, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Optimus Prime has seemingly crossed over to the dark side in the first teaser trailer for Transformers: The Last Knight.

The clip, released Wednesday, focuses on the ongoing conflict between man and machine and how war has been waged on earth for centuries.

Narrated by Anthony Hopkins, we learn that in the present, the planet is in danger once again but this time Autobots leader and champion Optimus Prime has left and footage is shown of the hero floating in space defeated.

As a human resistance led by a returning Mark Wahlberg and Josh Duhamel do their best to fight off the Decepticons alongside Bumblebee, Optimus Prime appears once again but only to slam down Bumblebee and threaten his life.

"Forgive me," Optimus says with notable purple eyes as he goes in to stab his most trusted ally.

Although not shown in the trailer, Decepticon leader and series antagonist Megatron is also set to reappear in the film.

Transformers: The Last Knight arrives in theaters June 23, 2017.
