LOS ANGELES, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman offers a glimpse of the devastated first lady she plays in the new trailer for Jackie.

Set for theatrical release on Dec. 2, the movie follows Jackie Kennedy as she attempts to deal with the 1963 assassination of her husband, U.S. President John F. Kennedy, while he was sitting in a car beside her.

Monday's 2 1/2-minute clip shows the woman cradling her husband's head in her lap after he was shot, washing blood out of her own hair in the shower, planning an opulent funeral against the advice of those around her and trying to sum up her life with Kennedy to an interviewer.

"Jackie is a searing and intimate portrait of one of the most important and tragic moments in American history, seen through the eyes of the iconic first lady, then Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy," a synopsis accompanying the trailer on YouTube explained. "Jackie places us in her world during the days immediately following her husband's assassination. Known for her extraordinary dignity and poise, here we see a psychological portrait of the first lady as she struggles to maintain her husband's legacy and the world of 'Camelot' that they created and loved so well."
