LOS ANGELES, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Forthcoming erotic drama Fifty Shades Darker has avoided an NC-17 rating. The Fifty Shades of Grey sequel starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson will be rated R for "strong erotic sexual content, some graphic nudity and language," E! News reported.

The Fifty Shades movies are based on the E.L. James book trilogy of the same name. The series follows the romance between BDSM-loving businessman Christian (Dornan) and inexperienced college student Ana (Johnson).
Fifty Shades of Grey, which opened in 2015 and earned $571 million at the box office, also received an R rating. Johnson said in the May issue of Interview that filming sex scenes for the sequel was less exciting than fans may think.
"It's pretty tedious," she admitted. "We're not having actual sex. But I've been simulating sex for seven hours straight right now, and I'm over it."
Dornan and Johnson completed filming Fifty Shades Darker and the final installment, Fifty Shades Freed, back-to-back in July. Dornan had nothing but praise for his co-star in a subsequent interview with Good Morning America.
"We have a lot of fun together," he said. "Dakota's funny. We've been through this mad journey together. I'm very thankful that I've done it with someone who's easy to do it with, because it could've been a very different experience had we not got on."
Fifty Shades Darker opens in theaters Feb. 10, 2017, with Fifty Shades Freed to follow Feb. 9, 2018.
