'Star Trek Beyond' second trailer: Enterprise crew is forced to abandon ship

LOS ANGELES, May 23 (UPI) -- The Enterprise crew is forced to abandon ship in the second trailer for Paramount's upcoming sci-fi sequel, Star Trek Beyond.

The clip first premiered by director Justin Lin during a Star Trek event in Los Angeles Friday, features returning stars Chris Pine as Cpt. James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock and Zoe Saldana as Lt. Nyota Uhura as they they navigate a new alien world after their ship is destroyed.

Screenwriter and star Simon Pegg (Scotty), Karl Urban (Dr. McCoy), John Cho (Hikaru Sulu) and Anton Yelchin (Pavel Chekov) also make appearances as do newcomers Idris Elba as the villainous alien threat Krall and Sofia Boutella as Jaylah, a mysterious alien ally who unknowingly sits in Kirk's captain's chair.

"Our captain will come for us. Mercy will be the last thing on his mind," a captured Uhura explains to Krall about Kirk who responds, "I am counting on it."

Star Trek Beyond blasts into theaters July 22 after it premieres at the San Diego Comic-Con on July 20.
