LOS ANGELES, April 22 (UPI) -- Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to star in Sony and Marvel's upcoming Spider-Man revival, Spider-Man: Homecoming. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Downey will star in the superhero epic as Iron Man opposite new Spider-Man actor Tom Holland after their relationship is established in Marvel's upcoming Captain America: Civil War.

Downey joins a growing cast that also includes Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Zendaya who has signed onto the film for a mystery role and Grand Budapest Hotel star Tony Revolori. Michael Keaton is also reportedly up for a villain role in the film.
Currently, Sony owns the cinematic rights to Spider-Man but previously struck a deal with Marvel to allow the iconic web head to appear in their cinematic universe starting with Civil War. "He is in the universe now, and the fun of the universe is that characters go back and forth," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said about the deal to Entertainment Weekly.
Directed by Jon Watts, production on Spider-Man Homecoming begins in June.
Recently, Downey praised Holland on Jimmy Kimmel Live! expressing excitement for the new Spider-Man film. "Tom Holland, he's a British actor, you've seen him in other stuff before but he is fantastic," Downey said. "I like this Tom Holland guy, I like him, it's about the person, Jimmy," he continued, responding to Kimmel who joked about a British actor portraying Spider-Man.
Captain America: Civil War arrives in theaters May 6 while the recently titled Spider-Man: Homecoming arrives on July 7, 2017.
