'Independence Day' sequel releases explosive new trailer

The sequel takes place 20 years after "Independence Day."

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Independence Day: Resurgence released an explosive new trailer during Super Bowl 50 on Sunday.

The preview sees newcomers Liam Hemsworth and Jessie Usher team up with original Independence Day star Jeff Goldblum to defend Earth from an alien attack 20 years after the events of the first movie.

Hemsworth plays Jake Morrison, an Earth Space Defense pilot, with Usher as Dylan Dubrow-Hiller, stepson to Steven Hiller (Will Smith), and Goldblum as David Levinson, now the Earth Space Defense director. Smith will not reprise Steven in the sequel.

Bill Pullman will return as president Thomas J. Whitmore, with Vivica A. Fox as Steven's wife Jasmine, Sela Ward as the current president, Maika Monroe as Thomas' daughter Patricia and Brent Spiner as Dr. Brackish Okun.

Independence Day opened in theaters in 1996 and earned $817 million at the box office. Director Roland Emmerich returned to write, direct and executive produce Resurgence, which is scheduled to open June 24.

Hemsworth is best known for playing Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games films and is also slated for By Way of Helena with Woody Harrelson. Usher portrayed Lyle on Cartoon Network series Level Up and presently plays Cam on Starz comedy Survivor's Remorse.
