PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Actor-filmmaker Sylvester Stallone admits he is surprised his iconic character -- boxing great Rocky Balboa -- has endured for seven movies over four decades.

"What's amazing is this character and his story have stayed around without any special effects, any car chases; without blowing anything up, which is what I usually do. Seriously, no bullets, no cursing, no sex scenes. Nothing," the 69-year-old star said at a recent Philadelphia press conference for Creed, a movie he produced that once again features him as Rocky, but this time as the trainer of Michael B. Jordan's up-and-coming fighter character Adonis Creed, the son of Rocky's late friend and former ring-rival, Apollo Creed.

"So, that's what I think is just so phenomenal. A generation that wasn't around when we did the third [Rocky,] forget the first one, that they would embrace this and take it to a new level. I am very proud and stunned that here we are on the seventh one," explained Stallone. "But, actually, it's only Creed I, so Rocky's story is done. This is another beginning. Hopefully, we'll have a whole new series. It just continues to go on. What these guys can do that I can't do anymore... they're living in the here and now, and I'm pretty much living in the past because that's where I acquired all my knowledge."

Creed, which is earning rave reviews from critics, opens in U.S. theaters Wednesday. The movie reunites Jordan and Ryan Coogler, the writer-director with whom he worked on the celebrated film Fruitvale Station.
