LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Producers behind Sicario are already planning a sequel ahead of the initial film's wide release.

According to Variety, Lionsgate has put into motion a second film following Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro's crime thriller. The film's writer, Taylor Sheridan, is reportedly supervising the project while director Denis Villeneuve is said to also be a part.

The news comes after Sicario earned a whopping $401,288 over the weekend from just six theaters. The film's per screen average during the extremely limited release is the highest among any other films this year.

Lionsgate motion picture co-chair Patrick Wachsberger told the outlet Sicario made him curious of where Toro's character, Alejandro, is headed. "Before the release of the movie, I was talking to Denis and I said what happened to this character?" he said. "Where is Benicio going?"

The film is expected to follow Alejandro's story after the initial events in Sicario, which Wachsberger believes may earn several Academy awards.

"This movie has multiple Oscar potential -- best movie, best director, best cinematography, best music, and, of course, the actors," he said. "All of the characters feel real."
