LOS ANGELES, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- The Audition, a short film starring director Martin Scorsese and his frequent collaborators Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, will not screen as planned at the Venice Film Festival.

"We have just been informed by the production that due to unexpected technical problems the film could not be here in time," festival organizers said in a statement Saturday.

A representative for the film told The Hollywood Reporter it is still in post-production and won't be ready for viewing at the festival.

Scorsese directed the $70 million short, which was penned by The Sopranos alum Terence Winter and features a cameo by Brad Pitt.

The mini-movie reportedly was produced to promote the opening of Melco-Crown's $2.3 billion Macau Studio City, and the existing Manila City of Dreams resorts and casinos, however, these properties do not appear in the piece

Scorsese and De Niro made the film classics Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas together. In recent years, Scorsese has collaborated with DiCaprio on the critically acclaimed dramas The Wolf of Wall Street, Shutter Island, The Departed, The Aviator and Gangs of New York. The auteur earned his only Best Director Oscar for helming The Departed.
