LOS ANGELES, July 24 (UPI) -- Julianne Moore and Ellen Page star in a moving first Freeheld trailer.

The 54-year-old actress portrays real-life police officer Laurel Hester, with Page as her domestic partner, Stacie Andree. Michael Shannon and Steve Carell play Hester's partner on the force and Garden State Equality founder Steven Goldstein, respectively.

The film is based on the 2007 documentary of the same name, which was inspired by Hester's fight against the Ocean County, New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholders. The veteran detective was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2005, and sought to pass her pension benefits on to Andree.

Freeheld is directed by Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist), and opens in theaters October 2. Moore is also scheduled for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, while Page is slated for Tallulah with Uzo Aduba and Zachary Quinto.
