LOS ANGELES, May 28 (UPI) -- Chris Pine may join the cast of Wonder Woman.

The 34-year-old actor would portray Wonder Woman's (Gal Gadot) love interest Steve Trevor. Pine was reportedly offered the role after winning over Gadot and studio execs at his audition.

In the DC comics, Trevor is an army intelligence officer who crash lands on Wonder Woman's home of Paradise Island. Wonder Woman was then known as Diana, and assumes the name Diana Prince after arriving in the U.S. with Trevor.

Wonder Woman will be directed by Patty Jenkins, who replaced Michelle MacLaren in April. The movie is scheduled for release June 23, 2017, although Gadot will debut as the superhero in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016.

Pine is known for playing Captain James T. Kirk in the Star Trek reboot films, and will reprise the role in Star Trek 3 in 2016. The actor is also scheduled for Comancheria with Jeff Bridges and upcoming Netflix series Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.
