LOS ANGELES, May 5 (UPI) -- Margot Robbie has Harley Quinn creator Bruce Timm's approval.

The 24-year-old actress will portray the DC Comics villain in Suicide Squad, and debuted in costume with her co-stars in a first promo photo this week. Fan reaction to Robbie as the character was mixed, but Timm told Polygon he was pleasantly surprised by the rendition.

"It's interesting," he related. "It's weird. Myself -- being somebody who's taken characters that pre-exist and putting my own spin on them in my own little universe -- I'm very aware of how when a character that I necessarily created shows up in other media that they have to adapt it and do different things with it than I would do."

"I'm very open to it to see what they're going to do," he continued. "I'm actually really excited ... [I] saw the first image of Harley Quinn from the Suicide Squad movie, and I thought, 'Woah. She looks actually pretty cute!' I was actually kind of worried I thought, 'Oh, she's going to look really, really bizarre and skanky,' but nah, she's not too bad. So I'm often mistaken."

Timm and Paul Dini co-created the character to appear on Fox's Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. Harley Quinn made her comics debut in The Batman Adventures #12 in 1993, and has since become a frequent and popular DC villain.

Suicide Squad is directed by David Ayer (Fury), and opens in theaters August 5, 2016. The film co-stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as the Joker and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, and follows the titular antihero team as they carry out dangerous missions for the U.S. government in exchange for commuted prison sentences.
