Disney green lights production of live-action Mulan

By Aileen Graef

LOS ANGELES, March 31 (UPI) -- Disney has given the go-ahead for production of a live-action version of the animated film Mulan.

The move is an effort to capitalize on the success Disney has recently seen with the live-action Cinderella and Maleficent, which have grossed $336.2 million and a total of $758.4 million, respectively. In 2010, Alice in Wonderland earned $1.02 billion.

Mulan earned $304.3 million worldwide and was nominated for Golden Globes and Academy Awards.

The original animated film released in 1998 told the story of Hua Mulan, a young woman who pretends to be a man in order to take her father's place in the Chinese military in the war against the Huns. The folk heroine inspired the script written by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek, informed The Hollywood Reporter.

Mulan starred the voice of Ming-Na Wen in the title role with Eddie Murphy as her dragon sidekick Mushu.

The new project will be taken up by Chris Bender and J.C. Spink.

The studio also has live-action versions of The Jungle Book, Dumbo and Beauty and the Beast slated for production.
