MUNICH, Germany, March 3 (UPI) -- Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in a first photo from Snowden.

The 34-year-old actor shared a picture of himself as the real-life 31-year-old NSA leaker on set Tuesday. Gordon-Levitt is currently shooting the biographical political thriller with director Oliver Stone in Munich.

"I was surprised when I first learned this about Snowden -- that he enlisted in the US Army in 2004," the star wrote on Facebook. "He wanted to go fight in Iraq, but during basic training at Fort Benning, he broke both of his legs and received an administrative discharge."

"After that, he was still determined to serve his country (love him or hate him, you gotta admit the guy's strong-willed) and so he ended up getting a job at the CIA, which is where his career in Intelligence began," he related. "Today's scenes felt like a really good way to start this shoot."

Snowden is based on The Snowden Files by Luke Harding and Time of the Octopus by Anatoly Kucherena. Shailene Woodley will co-star as Snowden's girlfriend Lindsay Mills, with Nicholas Cage, Zachary Quinto, Timothy Olyphant and Scott Eastwood also confirmed for roles.

Snowden is scheduled for release December 25. The real-life computer professional, now living in Russia, is charged with two counts of violating the Espionage Act, and faces up to 30 years in prison for leaking classified information on the NSA's surveillance program.
