The original 1960 film was helmed by John Sturges, and presented a Western-style interpretation of Akira Kurosawa classic Seven Samurai. True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto wrote the initial script for the remake, and John Lee Hancock was brought on to rework the draft.

Hawke was recently nominated for an Academy Award for his work in Boyhood, and last appeared in Predestination. The actor is scheduled for a number of upcoming projects, including Cymbeline with Dakota Johnson, Regression with Emma Watson and In a Valley of Violence with John Travolta.
