Liam Hemsworth offered lead role in 'Independece Day 2'

Will Smith, who co-starred on the original film with Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum and Mary McDonnell, stated last year he would not return for the sequel.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Australian actor Liam Hemsworth has been reportedly offered the lead role in Independence Day 2, the follow up to the 1996 smash hit Independence Day.

Sources connected to the project told The Wrap Hemsworth has the offer to star on the sequel, which has a working title of ID Forever.

The original sci-fi film follows the efforts of a group of survivors who lead a worldwide attack against aliens that have taken over earth. Actor Will Smith co-starred on the film along with Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum and Mary McDonnell, but stated last year he would not return for the sequel.

Roland Emmerich, who directed Independent Day, is returning as director for ID Forever and Carter Blanchard is re writing the script.

Michael B. Jordan is also rumored to have been offered a role in the upcoming thriller.

Goldblum and Pullman are expected to reprise their roles in the sequel which is slated for a June 2016 release.

Hemsworth is best known for his role as Gale in the Hunger Games franchise and for his high profile relationship and subsequent breakup with singer Miley Cyrus.
