In the Marvel comics, the Fantastic Four are a team of astronauts who develop superpowers after exposure to cosmic rays on a mission to outer space. Reed gains elasticity, Sue Storm can become invisible, Johnny Storm can generate flames and The Thing gains superhuman strength.

X-Men: Days of Future Past writer Simon Kinberg and Jeremy Slater penned the script, with Chronicle helmer Josh Trank as director. The film will see the team develop and harness their powers, and opens in theaters Aug. 7.

20th Century Fox previously released Fantastic Four in 2005, with Ioan Gruffudd as Richards, Jessica Alba as Sue Storm, Chris Evans as Johnny Storm and Michael Chiklis as Grimm. A less successful sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, premiered in 2007.
