PARK CITY, Utah, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Zoe Kravitz says her new film, Dope, pays homage to 1990s classics.

The 26-year-old actress described the movie in an interview with Billboard at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Dope stars Kravitz as a high school outcast in Inglewood in the 1990s, and premiered Saturday at the festival.

"It kind of has this classic L.A. urban thing," she said of the dramedy to the magazine. "Friday is one of my favorite films of all time, or Boyz N the Hood, and it has that kind of vibe to it. Nineties throwback!"

Dope is directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Our Family Wedding), and produced by actor Forest Whitaker, who also narrated the film. Shameik Moore portrays protagonist Malcolm, and A$AP Rocky, Tyga and Chanel Iman are also featured.

Dope was acquired by Open Road Films at Sundance, according to Variety. The distribution company competed with several other studios, including Focus Features and The Weinstein Co., for rights to the movie, and reportedly shelled out nearly $7 million.
