'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies' tops the North American box office for a 2nd weekend

Starring Richard Armitage, Martin Freeman and Ian McKellen, the final installment in the epic franchise earned $41.4 million in the United States and Canada between Friday and Sunday.

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has conquered the North American box office for a second consecutive weekend, Rentrak announced.

Starring Richard Armitage, Martin Freeman and Ian McKellen, the final installment in the epic Hobbit franchise earned $41.4 million in the United States and Canada between Friday and Sunday.

Coming in at No. 2 is Unbroken with $31.7 million, followed by Into the Woods at No. 3 with $31 million, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb at No. 4 with $20.6 million and Annie at No. 5 with $16.6 million.

Rounding out the top tier are The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 at No. 6 with $10 million, The Gambler at No. 7 with $9.3 million, The Imitation Game at No. 8 with $7.9 million, Exodus: Gods and Kings at No. 9 with $6.8 million and Wild at No. 10 with $5.4 million.
