PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Tom Hanks stars in a first photo from Steven Spielberg's new spy film.

The picture shows the 58-year-old actor bundled up in a long wool coat, gloves and hat as he walks with the 68-year-old director along a snowy road. The movie is reportedly shooting at Beale Air Force Base outside Marysville, Calif.

Hanks will portray James Donovan, a real-life attorney who negotiated the release of captured U.S. pilot Frances Gary Powers during the Cold War. Powers was shot down in his U-2 plane during a C.I.A. reconnaissance mission in 1960.

"This is one of the more astonishing stories about the Cold War I'd ever heard," Spielberg told Entertainment Weekly. "James Donovan is a hero to me, and Tom made him so completely accessible. I've always wanted to make a spy movie, and this is that and then some."

Hanks previously collaborated with Spielberg on Saving Private Ryan, The Terminal and Catch Me If You Can. Joel and Ethan Coen wrote the screenplay for the yet-untitled spy film, and Alan Alda, Amy Ryan and Mark Rylance will also star.

Hanks last appeared as Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks in 2013. He is scheduled for a number of upcoming projects, including A Hologram for the King and Meg Ryan's directorial debut Ithaca, and will reprise Robert Langdon for Inferno and The Lost Symbol.
