LOS ANGELES, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- A sequel to the 1996 adventure thriller Independence Day has been green lit and is in the works by 20th Century Fox.

Deadline reports filming will begin in March likely under the tutelage of director Roland Emmerich. The studio is reportedly pushing for a June 24, 2016 release.

Original cast member Will Smith has stated he won't reprise his role as Captain Steven Hiller in the sequel and the rest of the cast will be selected once Emmerich has officially signed on to the project.

The new film will have a script by Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods and Emmerich, Dean Devlin and Harald Kloser are producing.

If all goes according to plan, the sequel will be released on the 20th anniversary of the Independence Day release. The original film -- which follows the aftermath of an alien invasion -- grossed $811 million worldwide.
