'Pan' debuts fantastical first trailer

Peter Pan was originally a character created by Scottish author J.M. Barrie in 1902.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Pan released a first trailer Tuesday.

The preview establishes Peter Pan's (Levi Miller) life as an orphan before the pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) kidnaps him and sails to Neverland. Garret Hedlund also appears as James Hook, with Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily and Cara Delevingne as a mermaid.

Pan is based on the character created by Scottish author J.M. Barrie, and directed by Joe Wright (Atonement, Anna Karenina). The film aims to tell the origin story of Peter Pan, and will see Blackbeard, not Hook, act as the villain.

Pan is scheduled for release July 17, 2015. Amanda Seyfried also stars as Mary, with Leni Zieglmeier as Wendy Darling, Jack Charles as The Chief, Adeel Akhtar as Smee, Kathy Burke as Mother Barnabas, Na Tae-joo as Kwahu and Nonso Anozie as Bishop.
