McConaughey has transformed himself from a RomCom pretty boy into an actor who plays gravitas with ease. His turn in The Dallas Buyers Club won him a best actor Oscar. And his starring role in HBOs True Detective as the quirky, intense and a tad twisted and haunted Rust Cohle showed he could play a character as dark as Flagg.

According to the Telegraph, The Stand is expected to begin filming in 2015 with director Josh Boone, who also directed The Fault in Our Stars, and McConaughey as Flagg.
