'Mockingjay, Part 1' earns a whopping $123 million at the North American box office

Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, the third "Hunger Games" movie is the "biggest day-and-date release of the year, and Lionsgate's widest release ever," according to Rentrak.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Mockingjay, Part 1, the third installment in the Hunger Games film franchise, earned $123 million at the North American box office during its debut weekend, Rentrak announced Sunday.

"The global phenomenon that is The Hunger Games continues with the latest installment Mockingjay, Part 1. Launching in 85 international markets this weekend on 17,000 screens, this is the biggest day-and-date release of the year, and Lionsgate's widest release ever," Rentrak's senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said in a statement. "With an estimated international weekend total of $152 million, plus the North American debut of $123 million, the worldwide combined total is an impressive $275 million."

Coming in at No. 2 at the combined U.S. and Canadian box office this weekend is Big Hero 6 with $20.1 million, followed by Interstellar at No. 3 with $15.1 million, Dumb and Dumber To at No. 4 with $13.8 million and Gone Girl at No. 5 with $2.8 million.

Rounding out the top tier are Beyond the Lights at No. 6 with $2.6 million, St. Vincent at No. 7 with $2.4 million, Fury at No. 8 with $1.9 million, Birdman at No. 9 with $1.9 million and The Theory of Everything at No. 10 with $1.5 million.
