David Spade rocks mullet on set of 'Joe Dirt 2'

The actor co-wrote and starred in the original "Joe Dirt" in 2001.

NEW ORLEANS, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- David Spade has officially returned for Joe Dirt II: Beautiful Loser.

The 50-year-old actor posted a photo of himself from the sequel's set Monday on Instagram. Spade wears a blue flannel over a navy tee in the picture, and sports the character's signature long sideburns and mullet haircut.

"Day 1," he captioned the picture. "Let's get this [expletive] started! #imjoedirt #whatscrappenin."

Spade first portrayed the character in 2001 film Joe Dirt. The movie saw Joe go on a series of misadventures to find his birth parents, and grossed nearly $31 million on a $17.7 million budget. The feature was panned by critics, but has since gained a cult following.

Joe Dirt II: Beautiful Loser is currently filming in Louisiana, and is expected to debut in 2015. The movie will be released on Crackle, the video streaming website owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Spade is well known for his work on NBC series Saturday Night Live, and also starred as Dennis Finch on comedy Just Shoot Me!. He has since appeared as C.J. Barnes on ABC sitcom 8 Simple Rules, and guested on HBO's Entourage and TV Land's Hot in Cleveland.
