'Birdman,' 'Boyhood,' 'Dear White People' earn Gotham Award nominations

Winners are to be announced Dec. 1 at New York's Cipriani Wall Street.

NEW YORK, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Birdman, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Love is Strange and Under the Skin were nominated in New York for the Independent Filmmaker Project's Gotham Award for Best Feature.

The nominees for Best Actor are Bill Hader for The Skeleton Twins, Ethan Hawke for Boyhood, Oscar Isaac for A Most Violent Year, Michael Keaton for Birdman and Miles Teller for Whiplash.

A special Gotham Jury Award is to be presented jointly to Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo and Channing Tatum for their ensemble performance in Foxcatcher.

Up for Best Actress are Patricia Arquette for Boyhood, Gugu Mbatha-Raw for Beyond the Lights, Julianne Moore for Still Alice, Scarlett Johansson for Under the Skin and Mia Wasikowska for Tracks.

Nominated for the Breakthrough Actor prize are Riz Ahmed for Nightcrawler, Macon Blair for Blue Ruin, Ellar Coltrane for Boyhood, Joey King for Wish I Was Here, Jenny Slate for Obvious Child and Tessa Thompson for Dear White People.

In the running for Best Documentary are Actress, CITIZENFOUR, Life Itself, Manakamana, and Point and Shoot.

Shortlisted for the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award are Ana Lily Amirpour for A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, James Ward Byrkit for Coherence, Dan Gilroy for Nightcrawler, Eliza Hittman for It Felt Like Love and Justin Simien for Dear White People.

The Gotham Awards ceremony is to be held Dec. 1 at Manhattan's Cipriani Wall Street.

"Each year the Gotham Awards honor the best work from our independent storytellers and help new audiences discover their work. We congratulate this year's nominees, from the master film artists to the talented newcomers, a true representation of the rich and diverse range of today's independent filmmaking," Joana Vicente, executive director of IFP and the Made in NY Media Center, said in a statement Thursday. "We are grateful to our nominating committees of film critics, journalists, programmers and film curators for their dedication to selecting the nominees from so many worthy submissions."
