LOS ANGELES, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Paul Reubens says a new Pee-Wee Herman movie is "very imminent."

The 62-year-old actor dropped hints about the film in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. Reubens last portrayed the character in a feature film in 1988's Big Top Pee-Wee, and told the magazine a sequel should be announced soon.

"It's been months and months of being right on the verge of being announced," he revealed. "It's going to get made shortly after the new year ... I think it first got leaked four years ago or so that the movie was going to be made, and ever since then it's just been stalling and stalling. So I'm really ready for this to happen."

Reubens first starred as Herman in stage show The Pee-Wee Herman Show. The character later appeared in feature film Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985), and inspired CBS television series Pee-Wee's Playhouse. The children's program aired for five seasons before being canceled in 1990.

"I really love kids," the actor related. "I'm always knocked out by kids, how funny they are and what they appreciate ... It was so much fun and so rewarding to do something where the goal was to just make kids laugh, entertain them and show them a world that embraces creativity and nonconformity."

Reubens has sporadically reprised Herman for video shorts and appearances, and currently stars as Mr. Vargas on NBC drama The Blacklist.
