Johnny Depp stars as The Wolf in new 'Into the Woods' photo

The Disney film is based on the Stephen Sondheim musical of the same name.

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Into the Woods has released a first photo of Johnny Depp as The Wolf.

The 51-year-old actor dons a furry grey suit, fedora and red pocket square on the October 31 cover of Entertainment Weekly. Depp sports long claws and whisker-like facial hair, in addition to a tail and ears in the photo.

Actress Lilla Crawford is also pictured in a red cloak as Little Red Riding Hood. Alternate covers for the issue feature Mackenzie Mauzy as Rapunzel with Meryl Streep as The Witch, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella with Chris Pine as The Prince, and James Corden as The Baker with Emily Blunt as The Baker's Wife.

Into the Woods is directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago), and adapted from the Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical of the same name. The story follows the childless Baker and his wife as they attempt to lift a curse placed on them by The Witch, and encounter several characters from various Brothers Grimm fairy tales.

Into the Woods opens in theaters December 25.
