LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- David Ayer is in talks to helm a Suicide Squad film for Warner Bros.

The 46-year-old director is reportedly eyeing the project, with Justin Marks as writer and Chuck Roven as producer. The movie has been in development for years, but was put on the back burner in favor of Justice League.

Suicide Squad follows a team of antihero villains who carry out dangerous missions for the U.S. government in exchange for commuted prison sentences. Many different characters have been part of the group, including hired assassin Deadshot and former Arkham psychiatrist Harley Quinn.

Ayer is known for directing End of Watch and Sabotage, and wrote The Fast and the Furious and Training Day. The director will next release WWII film Fury with Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf on October 17.
