'Maze Runner' tops the North American box office

The science-fiction thriller is an adaptation of James Dashner's 2009 young-adult book of the same name. It stars Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Anish Surepeddi and Will Poulter.

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- The Maze Runner was the No. 1 movie in North America this weekend, earning $32.5 million at the U.S. and Canadian box office, Rentrak announced Sunday.

The science-fiction thriller is an adaptation of James Dashner's 2009 young-adult book of the same name. It stars Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Anish Surepeddi and Will Poulter.

Coming in at No. 2 at the weekend box office was A Walk Among the Tombstones with $13.1 million, followed by This is Where I Leave You at No. 3 with $11.9 million, No Good Deed at No. 4 with $10.2 million and Dolphin Tale 2 at No. 5 with $9 million.

Rounding out the top tier are Guardians of the Galaxy at No. 6 with $5.2 million, Let's Be Cops at No. 7 with $2.7 million, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at No. 8 with $2.6 million, The Drop at No. 9 with $2 million and If I Stay at No. 10 with $1.8 million.
