Johnny Depp stars as a spy in first trailer for 'Mortdecai'

The movie is based on the Mortdecai series of books by Kyril Bonfiglioli.

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Johnny Depp stars in the first trailer for Mortdecai.

The 51-year-old actor portrays Charlie Mortdecai, a debonair art dealer and rogue. The character is tasked with retrieving a stolen painting linked to Nazi gold, and must deal with a group of angry Russians, the British MI5 and an international terrorist as he bumbles his way through the job.

The movie is based on the Mortdecai trilogy of books written by Kyril Bonfiglioli in the 1970s, Don't Point That Thing at Me (1972), Something Nasty in the Woodshed (1976) and After You with the Pistol (1979). A fourth novel, The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery, was published posthumously in 1999.

The film is helmed by famed producer David Koepp, who directed Depp in Secret Window (2004). Ewan McGregor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Olivia Munn, Jeff Goldblum, Aubrey Plaza and Paul Bettany co-star.

Mortdecai is scheduled for release February 6, 2015.
