A Wrinkle in Time (1962) is a science fantasy novel for young adults, and the first book in L'Engle's Time Quartet series. The story follows a young girl named Meg Murry, whose scientist father has been missing since he worked on the mysterious tesseract. Meg and her younger brother, Charles Wallace, use the tesseract to transcend space and time in hopes of finding and saving their father.

The novel was reportedly one of Lee's favorite books as a child, and she plans to emphasize the female-driven narrative in her adaptation.
