SAN DIEGO, July 28 (UPI) -- Tom Hardy stars in the first trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road.

The 36-year-old actor portrays the title character, Max Rockatansky, in the new franchise installment. George Miller directed Mel Gibson in the original Mad Max (1979), Mad Max 2 (1981) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), and has returned to direct Fury Road. The movie continues the story of Mad Max, and is a prequel to Mad Max 2.

Fury Road takes place in the same post-apocalyptic Australia, and features a Max devastated by the murders of his wife and son. The film has very little dialogue, and Miller recently told Entertainment Weekly the feature is essentially one long action sequence in the wastelands. Charlize Theron stars as Max's ally, Imperator Furiosa, with Nicholas Hoult as raider Nux and Hugh Keays-Byrne as villain Immortan Joe. Keays-Byrne previously starred as gang leader Toecutter in the original Mad Max.

Mad Max: Fury Road is scheduled for release May 15, 2015.
