LOS ANGELES, June 30 (UPI) -- George Takei documentary To Be Takei has released its first trailer.

The 77-year-old actor, activist and pop culture icon provides insight and narration as the film delves into his life and career. Best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek, the movie also explores his childhood in a Japanese internment camp and his relationship with husband Brad Altman.

To Be Takei was directed by Jennifer M. Kroot (It Came from Kuchar), and features interviews with all of the surviving main cast members of Star Trek's original television series. The movie will debut July 3 on DirecTV, and will be released in select theaters August 22.
