'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' releases terrifying new trailer

"I'm sorry, my friend," Caesar says in the preview. "War has begun."

LOS ANGELES, June 20 (UPI) -- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has released a final, terrifying trailer.

The new footage highlights the showdown between humans and apes, and the inner conflict within protagonist Caesar. War ensues when the apes' idyllic and isolated community is disturbed by humans who have survived the deadly ALZ-113 virus. The apes wield guns, ride horses into battle and display evolved intelligence from Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) stars as Malcom, an ALZ-113 survivor who forms a strong bond with Caesar and the apes. His friendly sentiments are in opposition to Dreyfus (Gary Oldman), who seeks to kill the apes in a misguided attempt at revenge. Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings trilogy) portrays Caesar in a motion capture capacity.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opens in theaters July 11.
