LOS ANGELES, June 5 (UPI) -- Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep and Brenton Thwaites star in a dramatic new trailer for The Giver.

The upcoming movie is a Walden Media adaptation of Lois Lowry's 1993 novel of the same name. Bridges stars as the title character, with Streep as the Chief Elder and Thwaites as protagonist Jonas.

The story takes place in a utopian society that appears to have eradicated conflict and sickness. Each person is assigned a specific role in the community, and Jonas is selected to be the Receiver of Memory from The Giver. Through these stories, he begins to discover that the perfect world is much darker than it seems.

The black-and-white portion of the preview plays upon the story's idea of "Sameness." In order to purge conflict and sickness, the society sacrifices individuality and emotional depth in their lives.

The Giver is scheduled for release August 15.
