LOS ANGELES, June 2 (UPI) -- Jeremy Renner stars as a real-life journalist in the trailer for Kill the Messenger.

The new movie tells the story of Gary Webb, an investigative reporter who discovered a link between the CIA and Nicaraguan importation of cocaine into the U.S. He published his discovery in a series of articles titled the Dark Alliance in 1996, and the exposé provoked a CIA smear campaign against him.

The trailer depicts a tangle of government secrets, and illustrates the danger Webb faced after he published the articles. His career was effectively ended after the campaign, and he died of an apparent suicide in 2004.

Michael Cuesta (Homeland, Dexter) directed the film, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Michael Sheen, Ray Liotta and Andy Garcia also star. Kill the Messenger is scheduled for release October 10.
