LOS ANGELES, May 19 (UPI) -- A Godzilla sequel is reportedly in the works at Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.

The remake stomped into theaters over the weekend to a $93 million domestic opening and $103 million overseas. Deadline reports a sequel has been confirmed in light of the movie's success.

Godzilla first appeared in Ishiro Honda's Godzilla in 1954. The monster went on to star in 27 other movies produced by Japanese film company Toho Co., Ltd., and also inspired a number of video games, novels and comic books.

The plethora of Godzilla material already available may provide inspiration for the new sequel or sequels. Godzilla (2014) features new monsters, M.U.T.O.s, but there are plenty of old favorites, including Mothra and Mechagodzilla, that could play a role in future films.

It is currently unclear if Gareth Edwards will return to direct the sequel.
