The movies are inspired by J.K. Rowling's 2001 fantasy book with the same name.

Set in New York about seven decades before the start of the Harry Potter series, Beasts is described as an extension of the wizarding world, not a prequel to the popular book and movie franchise that established Rowling as a literary icon.
