LOS ANGELES, April 29 (UPI) -- Godzilla has released a dramatic new international trailer.

The footage has the dark feel of previous trailers, and highlights Godzilla and the genetically modified Muto monsters the creature will battle.

The Gareth Edwards-directed reboot aims to tell the origin story of Godzilla. Bryan Cranston and Juliette Binoche star as Joe and Sandy Brody, married researchers who work at a nuclear power plant. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the couple's son, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Ford Brody, and Elizabeth Olsen appears as Ford's wife, Elle. Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins portray scientists Dr. Ichiro Serizawa and Dr. Vivienne Graham.

Godzilla first appeared in the 1954 Ishiro Honda-directed film Godzilla. The monster went on to star in 28 other Toho Company Ltd. movies, productions that reboot director Edwards seeks to emulate.

Godzilla debuts in theaters May 16.
