LOS ANGELES, April 23 (UPI) -- A Flash Gordon remake is currently in the works at Fox.

20th Century Fox recently acquired film rights to the comic strip hero, and has brought on John Davis (Predator, Waterworld) and George Nolfi (Ocean's Twelve, The Bourne Ultimatum) as producers. Star Trek 3 writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will write the script.

The Flash Gordon comic was written by Alex Raymond, and debuted in print in January 1937. Gordon is a handsome Yale graduate who travels to the fictional planet Mongo after fiery meteors hit Earth. He is accompanied by Dr. Hans Zarkov and love interest Dale Arden, and the trio must combat the planet's evil ruler, Ming the Merciless.

Get Carter director Mike Hodges directed a British-American adaptation of the comic in 1980. The movie is a campy cult classic, and features a soundtrack composed and performed by Queen. The film is the object of adoration for characters Ted (Seth MacFarlane) and John (Mark Wahlberg) in 2012's Ted.

A potential release date for the Fox Flash Gordon remake has not been revealed.
