'12 Years a Slave' wins top Critics' Choice Awards

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- "12 Years a Slave" was declared the Best Film of 2013 at the Critics' Choice Awards ceremony in Los Angeles Thursday night.

The 19th century Louisiana-set epic also garnered honors for Best Adapted Screenplay for John Ridley and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong'o.

The 1970s con-artist picture "American Hustle" was named Best Comedy and its stars -- including Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence -- won the Best Ensemble statuette. Adams also earned the Best Actress in a Comedy accolade, while the film won the prize for Best Hair and Makeup.

Alfonso Cuaron won the Best Director trophy for "Gravity," which also earned awards for Best Sci-Fi or Horror Movie, Best Cinematography, Visual Effects and Editing. Its star, Sandra Bullock, was named Best Actress in an Action Movie.

The Best Actor Award went to Matthew McConaughey for "Dallas Buyers Club," while co-star Jared Leto scored the Best Supporting Actor statuette.

Cate Blanchett earned the Best Actress title for "Blue Jasmine" and Leonardo DiCaprio was deemed Best Actor in a Comedy for "The Wolf of Wall Street."

Mark Wahlberg went home with the Best Actor in an Action Movie award for "Lone Survivor." The film also earned the award for Best Action Movie.

"Frozen" was awarded the Best Animated Feature statuette and the Best Song prize for "Let It Go."
