Jennifer Lawrence received the evening's first prize for Best Supporting Actress in a Film, while her co-star Amy Adams earned the accolade for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical Film a short time later.

Directed by David O. Russell, "American Hustle" is about a pair of small-time grifters forced by an ambitious FBI agent to help bring down gangsters and corrupt officials in 1970s New York and New Jersey. The film co-stars Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro and Jeremy Renner.

Bale and Adams previously collaborated with Russell on 2010's "The Fighter," while Cooper, De Niro and Lawrence co-starred in the filmmaker's 2012 picture "Silver Linings Playbook."
