NEW YORK, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Chinese film director Zhang Yimou was ordered to pay a $1.24 million fine for violating China's family-planning limits, the New York Times said.

Yimou has three children with his current wife, Chen Ting, and a daughter from a previous marriage, the report said.

Chinese law limits couples living in cities to one offspring. Since Yimou already had one child, he and Ting would have lawfully been allowed to have one additional child together.

The Times said a district family-planning bureau in Wuxi Thursday ordered Yimou and his wife to pay the fine after Chinese news media recently focused on how many children Zhang had fathered and why he as a celebrity appeared to be excused from the population-limiting law.
