Chinese box offices earn $3.6B in 2013

BEIJING, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Movies took in nearly $3.6 billion in box-office sales in China last year, a 28 percent increase in sales from 2012, official figures indicate.

Zhang Hongsen -- head of the film bureau under the State General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio Film and Television -- said domestic films in China earned about $2.12 billion, accounting for 58.7 percent of box office revenues in 2013.

That represented a 54.3 percent increase in domestic film intake from 2012, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported Friday.

Chinese box offices took in $2.81 billion in 2012, 48.5 percent from domestic films.

China produced 638 films in 2013, down from 745 in 2012, Xinhua reported. The country added 5,077 film screens, bringing the total number of screens in the country to nearly 18,200, Zhang said.
