'Catching Fire' tops U.S. box office with an estimated $74.5M

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," starring Jennifer Lawrence, took first place at the U.S. box office for the holiday weekend with an estimated $74.5 million.

The blockbuster sequel took in an estimated $110.1 million from Wednesday to Sunday, obliterating the five-day Thanksgiving weekend record set in 2001 by "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" ($82.4 million).

Disney's "Frozen" debuted in second place with $66.713 million. It was the second-highest weekend ever for a movie opening out of first place.

Studio estimates of gross North American box office receipts are via Box Office Mojo.

"Thor: The Dark World" was a distant third with $11.108 million.

"The Best Man Holiday" was fourth with $8.491 million; "Homefront" was fifth with $6.97 million; "Delivery Man" sixth with $6.931 million; "The Book Thief" seventh with $4.85 million; "Black Nativity" eighth with $3.88 million; "Philomena" ninth with $2.8 million.

And "Last Vegas" rounded out the top 10 with $2.785 million.
