LOS ANGELES, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Film star Josh Brolin checked into a Northern California rehab facility to undergo treatment for substance abuse, sources told UsMagazine.com.

"He realized he needed help and is committed to his sobriety," an insider said.

The report didn't indicate when Brolin became a patient at the undisclosed facility or how long he is expected to stay there.

The actor made headlines in recent months for appearing drunk in public and getting involved in numerous altercations.

Brolin, 45, is known for his roles "No Country for Old Men," "Milk" and W." He is the son of actor James Brolin and stepson of singer Barbra Streisand.

Josh Brolin and his wife, actress Diane Lane, announced they had filed for divorce last February.
