CULVER CITY, Calif., Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Writer-director Neill Blomkamp has begun shooting a science fiction movie, "Chappie," in Johannesburg, South Africa, Sony Pictures Entertainment and MRC said.

The announcement was made Monday by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, Hannah Minghella, president of production for the studio, and MRC.

Starring Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel and Sigourney Weaver, "Chappie" was co-written by Terri Tatchell.

"After being kidnapped by two criminals during birth, Chappie becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot," a synopsis said.

Blomkamp's last film with MRC and Sony Pictures was "Elysium," starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster.
